G.K. “Joe” Guennel

An organizer of teams and leagues both Indiana and Colorado, and a major influence in the growth of college soccer in both of those states and elsewhere in the midwest.

Guennel, who was president of both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the Colorado state soccer association, founded the Indiana University Soccer Club in 1949. For 11 seasons, he was coach of the Indiana team, which later gained varsity status and became a perennial NCAA champion. In 1950, he founded the Midwest Soccer Conference, and in 1951 he founded the Indianapolis Soccer Club and the Ohio-Indiana Soccer League. From 1951 to 1961, he was president of both the Midwestern Soccer Conference and the Ohio-Indiana Soccer League.
