George Brown

Forward who starred in both the American Soccer League and the German-American Soccer League before his career was slowed by a knee injury suffered in his early 20s. Brown, the son of 1930 World Cup player James Brown, began his pro career in the German-American Soccer League of New York, playing for the German-Hungarians team. He won German-American league titles in three consecutive seasons, and was chosen as the GASL’s most valuable player in 1953, before advancing to the American Soccer League with the Polish Eagles of Elizabeth, N.J., in 1956. He played for the Polish Eagles until 1963, except for two years away in the army, and was the ASL’s leading scorer in the 1956-57 season.

Despite the knee injury that plagued him beginning in 1957, Brown played one full international for the United States, a World Cup qualifier against Mexico in 1957. He was a member of the United States team that unexpectedly won the bronze medal at the Pan-American Games in Chicago in 1959.

Inducted in 1995.
