A Trenton, New Jersey-born defender who starred with five different teams, and won three league championships, during his nine-year NASL career.
Smith, who won NASL titles with the Philadelphia Atoms in 1973 and the New York Cosmos in 1977 and 1978, played a total of 177 NASL games, scoring five goals. He played for the Atoms from 1973 to 1975, the Cosmos from 1976 to 1979, the San Diego Sockers for part of the 1979 season, the Philadelphia Fury in 1980 and the Montreal Manic in 1981. He was chosen as a first-team NASL all-star in 1975, and also had second-team or honorable mention selections in 1973, 1974, 1976 and 1979.
Smith played 18 full international games for the United States between 1973 and 1980, and was one of the United States’ most-capped players during the mid-1970s. He played in four of the United States’ five games in World Cup qualifying in 1976.
