Sheldon “Benny” Govier

A midfielder who was considered the best player in American soccer in the last decade of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th.

Govier, who had emigrated from Scotland as a child, made his debut for the famous Pullman A.C. of Chicago when he was only 15, but within a few years had moved his talents to St. Louis, where he was briefly the star of the Cycling Club team. After his return to Chicago, he played again for Pullman, and then for Wanderers, Woodlawn and Buxton Red Sox. He was a member of the Chicago all-star team that upset the touring English Pilgrims in 1905.

Inducted in 1950.
