The Society for American Soccer History has organized a virtual symposium to replace the symposium originally scheduled for the weekend of April 18-19 at Rutgers University-Newark. It was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to these extraordinary times, SASH is now pleased to announce the virtual symposium will be held over two sessions via the video conferencing service Zoom.

The first session, “The East Coast’s Soccer’s Roots from the Gilded Age to the ASL,” will take place on Friday, May 1, 2020, beginning at 1:00 PM EST. The presenters and their presentations are:

David Kilpatrick – The Home of Football: Gotham and the Growth of the Game
Tom McCabe – A Fractious Association: the Early History of the American Football Association
Brian Bunk – The Professionals of 1894
James Brown and George Brown – “This Is Your Soccer Life”*

“Domestic Leagues & International Stories from the Progressive Era to Present,” will take place Friday, June 5, 2020, at 1:00 PM EST

Patrick Sullivan – A Fine Silver Cup: Notable Trophies of Southern Soccer, 1897-1968
Kevin Tallec Marston – England vs. USA, 1950: Nationality, Eligibility, Immigration and Governance
Dan Creel – The 1976 American Soccer League Season
Steve Holroyd – When Everyone Could Be a Striker: The NASL Players Job Action of 1979
Zachary R. Bigalke – Border Crossings: American-Born Mexicans at International Tournaments

Please note that these sessions will be conducted over the SASH Zoom account. See above for the dedicated session URL.

*SASH vice-president James Brown will lead his father, National Soccer Hall of Famer, George Brown, through a series of photographs from his soccer journey. It is part of the “This Is Your Soccer Life” series.
